Why Do You Need To Do Backups?

Do you backup your computer data? Are you one of the those people who has thought about it but failed to actually go ahead and do it? And if you do backups when was the last time you did one?

Unfortunately it’s only when things go wrong that you’ll realise the importance of doing regular backups. Even a minor disaster like deleting a file or even a directory when you didn’t mean to will make you appreciate doing backups, especially after you’ve then also emptied your recycle bin. If you look at your latest backup you might find it there and if not keep working back through your backups and the chances are it will still be there.

Without a backup you’ll need to use some data file recovery software. If you’d done the backups you could have saved yourself the money and effort of having to get the file restoring software.

If the scenario is much worse and your computer’s crashed and corrupted your data you could be looking at losing everything. You could use a company to try and restore your data if the data recovery software draws a blank but it will cost you quite a bit of money and they may not be able to retrieve all your data.

So why not get into the habit of doing backups and avoid the need for computer file recovery. To get started you’ll need an external hard disk along with some software like Acronis True Image.

On the first run of the backup software it can take a long time especially if you’ve got a lot of stuff on your computer. After you’ve done the initial backup you can choose to do incremental backups from then on to save time.

Try and do a computer backup once a month at least. If you use you computer a lot then weekly backups would be better idea. For most of us it’s easiest to set up the software to automatically do the backups so we don’t have to worry about forgetting.

A good tip is to run your virus software before you do your backup so that you know that the resulting stored data is clean.
